Carlsen Residence
Novato, CA

Working within the existing footprint of this residence, we re-designed the ground floor to be one open living space with new windows framing the dramatic California landscape outside. A new contemporary kitchen was placed in the east corner while the dining area was moved to the now opened up middle section of the ground floor. The entry and stairwell were shifted to the northwest to open up views to the front yard. Over-sized French doors off the living room lead to a new exterior deck extending the living area to the west and overlooking a small vineyard below. The front and west fašades were dramatically altered through a rich composition of horizontal wood siding, windows and stone veneer to create an updated and dramatic look. Future phases of the remodel will include a new master bathroom within a reconfigured master bedroom suite on the 2nd floor, and a new home office/study filling an empty outdoor space between the garage and kitchen on the ground floor.

“What I enjoyed most about working with Okamoto Saijo Architecture was their energy and enthusiasm for our project, their calm, steady demeanor, and their willingness and ability to solve problems on the spot, often sketching design solutions in their notepads as we walked the property.”
