Sustainability &
Urban Ecology

Oakland, CA

Between 1992 and 1997, Okamoto with others at Urban Ecology wrote the Blueprint for a Sustainable Bay Area. Written for a popular audience, this book outlines a regional vision for how development should occur in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Blueprint has won nine local and national awards including the American Planning Association's National Award for Education. The heart of the Blueprint describes the four areas of urban development in order of incresing scale: The Bay Area Home, Neighborhoods, Urban Centers, and the Region. Each of these chapters describes the problems, challenges, alternatives and real-life case studies. The vision outlined in the Blueprint is a bold plan to focus development that will ensure a livable, equitable and prosperous future for all people without compromising environmental quality.
